Before the question is which charger, the question is what your existing electrical service can carry. Almost every EV charging quote that goes wrong went wrong there.
Can Your Fort Smith Home Take a Level 2 Charger?
Usually yes — but it depends on what your service is already carrying, not just on its size.
A Level 2 charger is a large, sustained load. Most home units run on a 50-amp or 60-amp circuit, and unlike a dryer or a range, a car charges for hours at close to full draw. That is why the honest answer to "will it work at my house" comes from a load calculation rather than from looking at the panel door.
What that calculation weighs is the square footage, the heating and cooling equipment, the water heater, the range, and anything else substantial already on the service — then it compares the total against the service rating. A 200-amp service with ordinary loads almost always has room. A 100-amp service that is already running central electric heat and an electric range often does not, and that is the case where adding a 50-amp charger circuit is not safe without upgrading first.
Does an EV charger need a dedicated circuit?
Yes. A Level 2 charger gets its own circuit, its own breaker, and nothing else on it. It is not a load you share with the garage receptacles or the shop lights — the charger will draw near its rated current continuously for hours, and a shared circuit will nuisance-trip at best.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Sometimes, and it is worth being precise about when. The panel matters in two separate ways, and they fail independently.
Capacity is whether the service can carry the new load at all — that is the load calculation. Space is whether there is a free double-pole slot to land the breaker in. A panel can easily pass one and fail the other: plenty of Fort Smith homes have adequate service but a full panel, and plenty have empty slots on a service that is already at its limit.
If either comes up short, the fix is an electrical panel upgrade in Fort Smith, and it is much cheaper to find that out before the charger is delivered than after. We will not tell you that you need one without running the numbers first.
Hardwired or Plug-In?
Both are legitimate. They are different tradeoffs, not better and worse.
Hardwired chargers are wired directly to the circuit and can run at full capacity — 48 amps continuous on a 60-amp circuit. That is the faster option, and outdoors it is often the required one.
Plug-in units use a NEMA 14-50 receptacle on a properly sized and bonded circuit. Output is capped at 40 amps continuous, but the charger stays portable and can be unplugged and taken with you.
The practical difference in charging speed between 40 and 48 amps is smaller than most people expect for overnight charging at home. If the car sits for eight hours anyway, either one refills it. Where the gap matters is a short evening top-up or a second vehicle sharing the same charger.
Where the Charger Goes
Location drives the cost more than the equipment does.
The single biggest variable is the distance from the panel to the charger and what the wire has to pass through to get there. A charger on the garage wall directly behind the panel is a short, cheap run. A charger on the far side of a detached garage, or on the opposite end of the house from the service, is a long conduit run and a materially different quote.
Outdoor and detached-garage installations bring their own requirements — equipment rated for the location, protected conduit, and correct handling of the run between structures. That is a normal job, not a problem, but it is worth telling us at the quote stage rather than at the install.
What We Check Before Quoting
We do not quote an EV charger over the phone from the make and model. What actually gets looked at:
- Service size and existing load — the load calculation that decides whether the circuit can be added at all
- Panel space — whether there is a free double-pole slot, and whether the panel is a type worth adding to
- Panel condition — adding a large continuous load to a panel with existing problems is not a good trade
- The run — distance, route, indoor or outdoor, and what has to be opened up or surface-mounted
- The charger you have chosen — its rated current, whether it is hardwired or plug-in, and what circuit it actually calls for
- Grounding and bonding at the panel, since the new circuit depends on it
What the Installation Involves
Once the quote is agreed, the work itself is straightforward:
- Load calculation confirmed and the circuit sized
- Conduit and wire run from the panel to the charger location
- A dedicated breaker, properly rated and properly installed
- The charger mounted and connected, or the receptacle installed and bonded
- Permit and inspection
- Testing before we leave
Most home installs take about 3 to 6 hours of on-site work. If a panel upgrade has to happen first, that is a separate day.
What It Costs in Fort Smith
Most straightforward home Level 2 installs in Van Buren and Fort Smith run roughly $850 to $2,200. What moves a job inside that range:
- How far the charger is from the panel, and how hard that run is
- Indoor or outdoor installation
- Whether the panel has capacity and space for the new circuit
- Whether a panel upgrade has to come first
The quote is fixed and in writing before anything is scheduled. If the load calculation says a panel upgrade is needed, you get that number too, before you commit to either.
Permits and Inspection in Fort Smith
EV charger installations are permitted, inspected electrical work in most Arkansas jurisdictions, and we pull the permit and request the inspection as part of the job.
What is specific to Fort Smith is worth knowing, because it sets the schedule. The City states that its mechanical and electrical inspection program pertains to all mechanical and electrical within the city, inspected for compliance with the National Electrical Code as amended by local ordinance — currently the 2020 National Electric Code together with the City of Fort Smith Electrical Code Amendments. That is the standard a new charger circuit is judged against.
The City also requires that the electrical contractor request its own electrical inspection rather than have it folded into another trade's, and it schedules on a same-day rhythm: requests in before 9:00 a.m. are scheduled that morning, requests in before 2:00 p.m. that afternoon. In practice that means a charger installed in the morning can usually be inspected the same day.
