How to Tell If Your Panel Is the Problem

Subpanel or Full Replacement?
A subpanel adds circuit positions. It does not add service capacity.
That distinction decides the job. If your existing service is genuinely large enough and the only problem is that the main panel has run out of physical space — a common situation in a finished garage, a shop, an addition, or a detached building — a subpanel fed from the main is the correct and less expensive answer.
If the service itself is undersized, a subpanel just distributes the same insufficient supply into more breakers, and the underlying problem is still there. In that case the main panel and service entrance are what have to change. The load calculation is what settles which of the two you are actually looking at, and it is worth doing before anyone quotes hardware.
