Most electrical repair calls start with a symptom, not a diagnosis. Here is what the common ones usually mean — and how to tell whether you are looking at a repair or at a system that has run out of room.
Start With the Symptom
These are the four calls we field most often. The short answer is first; the detail follows it.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job, and it is telling you one of three things: the circuit is drawing more current than it is rated for, there is a fault in the wiring or in something plugged into it, or the breaker itself has worn out and is tripping below its rating.
Which one it is changes the fix entirely, and you cannot tell them apart by looking. An overloaded circuit is a load problem — the answer is usually a dedicated circuit for whatever is drawing the current, not a bigger breaker. A short or a ground fault is a wiring problem that has to be traced. A tired breaker is a $40 part. Fitting a larger breaker to stop the tripping is the one response that is genuinely dangerous: the breaker protects the wire, and oversizing it means the wire can now overheat without anything cutting the power.
Why is an outlet dead even after resetting the breaker?
Nine times out of ten the outlet is downstream of a GFCI device that has tripped somewhere else — often in a bathroom, garage, kitchen, or on an exterior wall — and resetting that device restores the whole run. If the GFCI will not reset, or there is no GFCI in the circuit, the usual culprit is a failed connection: a back-stabbed wire that has lost tension, a loose neutral in a junction box, or a worn receptacle.
Older Fort Smith homes add a fourth possibility that newer ones do not: a two-wire circuit with no equipment ground feeding a modern three-prong receptacle. It works until it does not, and it never had the protection the outlet's shape implies.
Why are my lights flickering?
Flicker on one fixture is usually that fixture — a loose lamp, a failing dimmer, or a bad connection at the switch. Flicker across several rooms at once is a different and more serious signal: it points at a loose or failing connection upstream, at the panel, at the service conductors, or on the utility's side of the meter.
The pattern worth acting on quickly is whole-house flicker or dimming that coincides with large appliances starting, especially if it comes with warm cover plates or a buzz at the panel. That combination can indicate a loose main connection or a compromised neutral, and a compromised neutral can put uneven voltage across the house and damage electronics.
What should I do if an outlet smells hot or burned?
Stop using the circuit. Unplug what you can reach safely, switch that breaker off, and do not switch it back on to test it. A burning or fishy smell at a receptacle or panel means something has already overheated, and heat marks the connection as failed whether or not it is still working.
Then call an electrician the same day. If there is smoke, visible sparking, or anything is burning, call 911 first. If a power line is down or the damage is at the meter or the service drop, call the utility first.
Repair, or a Capacity Problem?
This is the question worth asking before you spend anything, and it is the one most repair pages skip.
A repair fixes something that has failed: a worn receptacle, a loose connection, a damaged run of cable, a breaker that will not hold. The system was adequate and one part of it stopped working.
A capacity problem is different. The parts are fine; there is simply not enough service, or not enough space, for what the building is now being asked to do. The tells are consistent: breakers trip on normal use rather than on a fault, the panel has no free slots or is already full of tandem breakers, lights dip whenever a large load starts, or you are planning to add something substantial — a shop, a hot tub, a heat pump, an EV charger, a generator — to a service that was sized decades ago for none of it.
Chasing a capacity problem with repairs is how people spend real money and stay frustrated. What Fort Smith Housing Stock Changes About a Repair Call
Fort Smith is old enough, and has grown in enough distinct waves, that the same symptom means different things in different parts of town.
In the older housing near Belle Grove and downtown, a dead outlet is as likely to be an original splice or a brittle cloth-insulated conductor as it is to be the receptacle itself, and the repair is often about making a legacy circuit safe rather than simply replacing a part. Mid-century homes on the Northside and Southside tend to have panels that were correctly sized for their decade and have been added to ever since — there, tripping breakers are frequently a capacity signal rather than a fault. Newer construction out toward Chaffee Crossing rarely has failing wiring; the calls there are usually about adding load to a service that has room for some of it but not all of it.
None of that is a reason to assume the worst about an older house. Age alone does not make a system unsafe. It is a reason to have the diagnosis done properly instead of swapping parts until the symptom moves.
How We Diagnose Before We Quote
Every repair call follows the same order, because guessing is what makes electrical work expensive.
- Listen. What is happening, when it started, what changed, and what has already been tried.
- Test. Voltage, continuity, load, and grounding — wherever the symptoms actually point.
- Diagnose. Identify the root cause, not the most convenient symptom.
- Quote. A written, up-front price before any repair work begins.
- Repair. A code-compliant fix, tested before we leave.

When a Fort Smith Repair Needs a Permit and an Inspection
Not every repair is permitted work — swapping a receptacle is not the same as altering a circuit — but when a job does cross that line, Fort Smith runs its own process, and it is worth knowing how it actually operates.
The City enforces the 2020 National Electric Code together with its own City of Fort Smith Electrical Code Amendments, so the standard your repair is judged against is set locally, not just at the state level. The City is also explicit that the electrical subcontractor must request its own electrical inspection — it is not folded into a general building inspection, and it is not the homeowner's job to chase it. Two practical consequences. First, if a repair opens up a wall or a ceiling, the rough-in electrical has to be inspected before any of that wiring is covered with insulation, sheetrock, or other coverings. Closing it up early means opening it again. Second, the City schedules on a same-day rhythm: inspection requests received before 9:00 a.m. are scheduled for that morning, and requests received before 2:00 p.m. for that afternoon. That is why the timing of a call matters more here than the paperwork does.
Stop Using the Circuit and Call
Some faults are a fire risk rather than an inconvenience. Switch the circuit off and call (479) 208-2279 the same day if you see:

- Sparks when plugging in or unplugging anything
- Scorch marks or discoloration around a receptacle
